3-1-11 Blinding Light 60/365

3-1-11 Blinding Light 60/365

I really liked the way yesterday's picture came out, so I thought I'd try another abstract. My super husband made dinner tonight, and while I was smelling the delicious smells of garlic bread and spaghetti, I noticed these shapes on the wall in front of me. The dimming light outside was still bright enough to shine through the blinds and make a fun pattern on the wall.

Because my walls aren't all that colorful, I played around with the color to make it a more appealing to me. =o)

The Appeal

In a crowded courtroom in Mississippi, a jury returns a shocking verdict against a chemical company accused of dumping toxic waste into a small town’s water supply, causing the worst “cancer cluster” in history. The company appeals to the Mississippi Supreme Court, whose nine justices will one day either approve the verdict or reverse it.

Who are the nine? How will they vote? Can one be replaced before the case is ultimately decided?

The chemical company is owned by a Wall Street predator named Carl Trudeau, and Mr. Trudeau is convinced the Court is not friendly enough. With judicial elections looming, he decides to try to purchase himself a seat on the Court. The cost is a few million dollars, a drop in the bucket for a billionaire like Mr. Trudeau. Through an intricate web of conspiracy and deceit, his political operatives recruit a young, unsuspecting candidate. They finance him, manipulate him, market him, and mold him into a potential Supreme Court justice. Their Supreme Court justice.

The Appeal is a powerful, timely, and shocking story of political and legal intrigue, a story that will leave listeners unable to think about our electoral process or judicial system in quite the same way ever again.

As the author of twenty bestselling books, John Grisham has set the standard for legal thrillers since the debut of The Firm in 1991. Enjoy this Q&A--as well as a personal note to Amazon readers--from John Grisham.
1. Your new novel starts off where most courtroom dramas end--with the verdict. Where did you get the idea to reverse the usual order of events this time around?
The actual trial is not a terribly significant part of the story. Most all of the action and intrigue begins after the trial is over, with the verdict and the subsequent appeal.

2. The Appeal overtly suggests that elected judges can be bought. If the novel is meant as a cautionary tale, what's next--the Presidential primaries?
Why not? Over one billion dollars will be spent next year in the Presidential primaries and general election. With that kind of money floating around, anything can be bought.

3. Speaking of electoral politics, you've been more vocal recently about your political views ... first supporting Jim Webb for Senate and now endorsing Hillary Clinton for the White House. Have you given any thought to running for office yourself?
No. I made that mistake 25 years ago, and promised myself I would never do it again. I enjoy watching and participating in politics from the sidelines, but it's best to keep some distance.

4. This is your first legal thriller in three years. How did it feel to get back to the genre that started it all, and can fans expect another thriller from you next year?
I still enjoy writing the legal thrillers, and don't plan to get too far away from them. Obviously, they have been very good to me, and they remain popular. I plan to write one a year for the next several years.

5. Your nonfiction book The Innocent Man continues to be a bestseller in paperback. In your ongoing work with The Innocence Project, have you come across another story of the wrongfully convicted that begs to be written as nonfiction?
There are literally hundreds of great stories out there about wrongfully convicted defendants. I am continually astounded by these stories, and I resist the temptation to take the plunge again into non-fiction.

6. What's on your bedside reading list at the moment?
1. The Nine by Jeffrey Toobin
2. Eric Clapton's autobiography
3. East of Eden by John Steinbeck.

William Minister Store Building (1875)

William Minister Store Building (1875)

This corner structure, clipped to provide and angled entrance, is remarkable for its iron awning that extends more than four feet over the sidewalk--one of only two such corner store buildings that survive in the borough. It was built in 1875 by William Minister (1852-1890) for use as a grocery and provisions establishment. Minister died young, and though the store was sold after his death, his father's widow, Edith White Minster, continued to live in the building until her death in 1909. The awning, it must be noted, is exceptional for its cast-iron scroll decorations.

bamboo drape - Natural Bamboo

Natural Bamboo Beaded Curtain 125 Strands (+hanging hardware)

Natural Bamboo Beaded Curtain 125 Strands (+hanging hardware)

Handmade and hand painted: Each of our beaded curtains begins with approximately 4000 beads cut into 2.5" sections from natural bamboo stalks. The bamboo beads are then strung together by hand using wire to create a strand. 125 strands are then attached to a wooden hanging bar to create a bamboo beaded curtain. Finally, each bead and strand is individually hand painted producing the art you see on each beaded curtain. Since each bead is entirely painted the image is viewable on both sides of the curtain from any angle. Highest quality with 125 strands: Our hand painted bamboo beaded curtains are the highest quality beaded curtains currently being manufactured. Each bamboo curtain is truly in a class of its own. As an importer of beaded curtains for nearly 10 years, we have learned by trial, error, and customer feedback. From our experience we have found 125 strands to be the ideal number of strands per curtain. This strand count provides curtain density, durability, and vivid image detail. With less than 125 strands, you lose density and detail in the painting. With greater than 125 strands, the bead diameter becomes too small making the beads fragile and prone to breaking.

Bamboo shawl!

Bamboo shawl!

This was a really fun project - a shawl made out of bamboo yarn (lovely stuff, great drape, evironmentally super-friendly), using a shadow-weave structure. I found myself slowing down as I wove it, it was so much fun! It was for a customer, though, so I had to weave it, finish it and send it off to her...

PA - Mill Run: Fallingwater - Guest Room - Tiffany Inkstand

PA - Mill Run: Fallingwater - Guest Room - Tiffany Inkstand

This Tiffany Inkstand, located in Fallingwater's guest room, was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1906. The small, bronze, oblong inkstand, has two doors that swing open to reveal small, cauldron-shaped inkwells. Not a regularly stocked Tiffany item, the "D" in the serial number suggests that it was probably made for an exhibition or as an experiment. The "9" indicates that it was probably the ninth to have been made. The Kaufmanns had an important Tiffany collection, much of which was purchased from the Lillian Nassau Studios and eventually donated to the Museum of Modern Art.

The desk lamps at Fallingwater were designed exclusively for the house by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1937. Only 8?-inches tall, but 36-inches wide, the desk lamp is made of black walnut. The inside of the shade is painted with a silver reflective paint to intensify the indirect cast of the light. Wright's desk lamps have brass electric fitting and its base is an ammonium sulfide patinated bronze.

Fallingwater, sometimes referred to as the Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr. Residence or just the Kaufmann Residence, located within a 5,100-acre nature reserve 50 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built between 1936 and 1939. Built over a 30-foot flowing waterfall on Bear Run in the Mill Run section of Stewart Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, the house served as a vacation retreat for the Kaufmann family including patriarch, Edgar Kaufmann Sr., was a successful Pittsburgh businessman and president of Kaufmann's Department Store, and his son, Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., who studied architecture briefly under Wright. Wright collaborated with staff engineers Mendel Glickman and William Wesley Peters on the structural design, and assigned his apprentice, Robert Mosher, as his permanent on-site representative throughout construction. Despite frequent conflicts between Wright, Kaufmann, and the construction contractor, the home and guesthouse were finally constructed at a cost of $155,000.

Fallingwater was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. It was listed among the Smithsonian's 28 Places to See Before You Die. In a 1991 poll of members of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), it was voted "the best all-time work of American architecture." In 2007, Fallingwater was ranked #29 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list.

National Register #74001781 (1974)

A Taste Of Honey..

A Taste Of Honey..

"Tasting much sweeter than wine..." - lyrics from the Beatles song - honey by bees, cleverness and intelligence exercised by this mother Sumatran Orangutan!

It was fascinating to watch a number of Melb Zoo's Sumatran Orangutans use these tools with wonderful dexterity to extract the honey.

Unfortunately from a photography point, the canvas awning made photography difficult. Also the many young human children and some very pushy and rude parents would push in and just stand right in front of the glass windows, further blocking the view.

One great ape acts with great dignity and another species is very selfish....

Once widespread throughout the forests of Asia, orang-utans are now confined to just two islands, Sumatra and Borneo. There are two genetically distinct species: the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) and the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus). The two species show slightly different physical characteristics. Sumatran orangutans have lighter hair and a longer beard than their Bornean relatives, and Sumatran males have narrower cheekpads. Both species are highly endangered due to habitat loss and poaching.
The orangutan is one of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom, sharing 96.4% of our DNA. Indigenous peoples of Indonesia and Malaysia call this ape "Orang Hutan" which literally translates as "Person of the Forest".

The main threat to the Orangutan is habitat loss, as rainforest is cut down for timber logging or cleared for human settlement.
Because of increased availability, the diet of Sumatran orang-utans has a higher percentage of pulpy fruit and figs compared to that of Bornean orang-utans.
Orangutans breed more slowly than any other primate, with the female producing a baby on average only once every 7-8 years. Infants are dependent on their mothers for at least five years, learning about survival in the forest. Orangutans live for around 45 years in the wild, and a female will usually have no more than 3 offspring in her lifetime. This means that orangutan populations grow very slowly, and take a long time to recover from habitat disturbance and hunting.Melbourne Zoo has set up a forest of poles for the orangutans and gibbons to use, simulating a real wooded forest. This sort of forest has been pioneered for use in Sumatra in special reserves set up as rehabilitation centres for injured, sick or orphaned orang-utans to build up survival skills before being released back into the wild.

Art Deco Villa of Clinker Brick - Thornbury

Art Deco Villa of Clinker Brick - Thornbury

With ominous clouds behind, this pretty stylised clinker brick Art Deco villa with its matching brick wall in the Melbourne suburb of Thornbury basks in a moment of sunshine.

Standing proudly on the corner of an intersection of a busy thoroughfare and a side street, its white wrought iron Art Deco gate encourages you to walk up the garden path hedged by lush green connifers to the front door.

The low slung roof, little etched glass vestibule window, rounded edging of each wall and the "waterfall windows" (complete with their original flounced curtains that look like a cascading waterfall) all pay homage to the chic, uncluttered lines of Australian Art Deco architecture in the late 30s, just before the Second World War. This house also features blue and white awnings to shade the windows on hot days, which neatly hide up beneath the eaves of the house. One has not been wound in properly and gives the secret away. Most ingenious!
